As a result of the refugee crisis in 2015 caused by the Syrian war, Hungary has a strict migration policy. Since 2018, the external border of Hungary has been hermetically closed. People find other routes to reach the EU. One of the new routes goes through Bosnia. To reach the EU, migrants must cross dangerous and mountainous terrain. In the Bosnian town of Bihac, just outside the European Union, an illegal refugee camp arises in the spring of 2019.
Thousands of people sometimes desperately wait for months for a chance to cross the border. The Red Cross is one of the few organizations that are active in the camp. The driving force of the local Red Cross in Bihac is Senka Vukovic (70), a experienced volunteer. Senka has been active as a Red Cross worker since the Balkan war. We followed her during her work in one of the camps around Bihac.
